What Does Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existance mean?

Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence

By: Adrienne Rich

In the reading "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" the author Adrienne Rich tries to give us a meaning behind the two terms in the title. The two terms used in the title seemed familiar to me. The thing is, that reading it for the first time I thought I had the meaning already figured out. It turns out I was wrong and made me open my eyes toward the two terms.

Basically what the author is trying to say is that it isn't human nature to be heterosexual. Rich doesn't use the word heterosexual to mean one’s preference of the opposite sec as one’s sexual partner, she is precisely questioning what we take to be a “preference” In other words Rich is questioning is it human nature to be attracted to the opposite sex or is it how we are perceived into thinking that way.

In my opinion I have quarrels with this theory as I believe it is right and wrong at the same time. I believe it is human nature to be attracted to the opposite sex because it's nature in general, most animals mate with the opposite gender. Then again there are some animals that mate with the same gender such as Dolphins and Sea Horses. I personally think it is something I cannot add insight towards due to my bias.

Here is a interesting video on how most people don't know what the term; Heterosexual means; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88tWn26bh3M

  1. While I respect your opinion, I do disagree that it is human nature to be attracted to the opposite sex. I believe that every human is born with the ability to love, and who they are attracted to is a quality that appears with sexual development.

  2. I understand what you mean about the mating. There are people that believe that you can't be born gay and that it's a choice. I disagree with that, I do believe it's a choice or preference for some people but not all. There are children that know they are "different" very early in life, and then there are some people that have been physically or emotionally abused by men and choose women. I believe it's only human nature to procreate with the opposite sex..for humans :)
